Dr. Michael J. Thomas

Michael J. Thomas, MD, FACS, FASMBS, is an experienced bariatric surgeon dedicated to helping patients live healthier lives. In addition to performing a full range of bariatric procedures, he also serves as the Director of Bariatric Surgery at Southern Surgical Hospital and was selected by the State of Louisiana to manage a surgical weight loss pilot program for state employees.

Dr. Thomas is dedicated to providing the most advanced weight loss options available to patients in New Orleans. He is skilled in minimally invasive laparoscopic technique and has lectured nationally and trained other surgeons in laparoscopic gastric bypass techniques. Dr. Thomas is also highly experienced in gastric sleeve surgery, as well as non-surgical weight loss options including intragastric balloons and the endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG). He specializes in utilizing proven methods of treating obesity and providing personalized care to help each patient reach their goals. Dr. Thomas was recently recognized by Louisiana Life as a TOP DOCTOR, an honor awarded by his peers in appreciation of his surgical skill and his dedication to patients.

Dr. Thomas is a native of New Orleans and a graduate of Tulane University. He earned his medical degree from LSU Medical School, where he also completed a residency in general surgery and served as chief resident. Dr. Thomas is board certified and is a Fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. He lives in New Orleans with his wife, bariatric surgeon Dr. Rachel Moore, and their 3 children.
