Challenges in Louisiana
Dr. Moore supports all current efforts within the state of Louisiana to increase access to care for individuals suffering from obesity. One significant challenge for providers is that while there appears to be treatment coverage for Medicaid patients, the reimbursement rate is so low that facilities cannot support the procedures. Dr. Moore advocates for increased reimbursement of Medicaid-covered procedures to treat obesity.
Recognizing the need for obesity treatment reform, there are also several legislative bills that are being sponsored in the current session:
HB329 – sponsored by Representative James Armes. INSURANCE/GROUP-STATE: Requires the state Office of Group Benefits (State Employee Insurance) to cover bariatric surgery techniques for the treatment of morbid obesity. Current Status: Pending House Insurance.
SB173 – sponsored by Senator David Heitmeier. HEALTH CARE: Provides for treatment of morbid obesity. (10/1/15) Current Status: Pending Senate Insurance.
Dr. Moore joined Senator David Heitmeier on the Louisiana Senate floor to advocate for SB173, a bill proposed by Senator Heitmeier to mandate insurance coverage of morbid obesity treatment. Read more.
