Study Shows Safety of Bariatric Reoperations
As with any type of surgery, sometimes the first operation a patient receives does not lead to sufficient results and a second procedure is recommended. Initially, there were concerns that a second bariatric operation may be less safe. Insurance companies sometimes refused to pay for the second operation because of these safety concerns. However, a national task force and large study have shown that second bariatric procedures tend to have low complication rates. Additionally, these operations often lead to substantial weight loss after 1 year.
