Focus on Positive Relationships

Your personal relationships are important to your long-term success. Here are some tips that may help on your journey.

Stay positive, stay motivated, and stay healthy

It’s important to surround yourself with people who support your new lifestyle and will help you reach your weight loss goals. Spend time with people who will help you deal with new challenges and feelings, cheer you on as you reach each weight loss goal, support your new eating habits, encourage you, exercise with you – and most of all, celebrate your achievements. Beyond supportive family members, friends, and coworkers, it’s also a good idea to connect with people who have had metabolic and bariatric surgery. Support groups are also a fantastic opportunity to share in the experiences of patients like you.

Share your reasons and find support

While you may understand that metabolic and bariatric surgery is the best option for your health goals, family and friends may not know that your various diet and exercise attempts have failed or that obesity is a disease. They also may not know that surgery is more effective for maintaining weight loss long term than other traditional methods. Encourage family members and friends to visit the Obesity Action Coalition Web site to learn more about obesity.

Don’t let emotional, physical, and social changes stop you

Surgical treatment will not only affect your appearance, if will affect how you feel about yourself and food, and how people react to you. Depression is common among patients for various reasons. For some, food was a coping mechanism they no longer can use – it’s like they lost a friend. Some are uncomfortable with new romantic or sexual attention. And others find themselves dealing with jealousy or sabotage from family or friends. These are just some of the reasons why it’s so important to have a trusted group of people around you to support you to help you reach your goals.
