Elipse Balloon

Elipse New Gastric Balloon Technology on the Horizon

At Moore Metabolics, Dr. Rachel L. Moore and Dr. Michael J. Thomas are dedicated to researching new technologies in bariatric medicine and bringing the most innovative weight loss solutions to Louisiana. Recently, Dr. Moore has been involved in critical U.S. trials for the Elipse gastric balloon.*

What Is Elipse?

The Elipse Balloon is a non-surgical weight loss procedure and the first “procedure-less” gastric balloon, meaning that Elipse is placed and extracted without any surgery, endoscopy, or anesthesia. Elipse is not yet available in the United States, where it is still undergoing clinical trials, but it is already in use in Europe and the Middle East. The Elipse balloon is part of the Elipse program which includes six months of nutritional counseling, supportive medical supervision, and access to interactive tools to monitor weight loss progress.

How Does Elipse Work?

Elipse is a specially designed soft balloon that is meant to take up space in the stomach for up to 4 months, during which time the patient feels full with less food and is able to eat less, lose weight, and learn new habits. The balloon is initially placed in a capsule attached to a long, thin tube. The patient swallows the capsule in the presence of their weight loss doctor. An x-ray is used to confirm that the balloon is in place and then the doctor uses the tube to inflate the balloon before removing the tube. The balloon is designed to remain in the stomach for 16 weeks, during which time studies have shown that patients lose, on average, approximately 30 pounds1. After 16 weeks, the balloon will deflate and should pass naturally through the gastrointestinal tract without the need for a removal procedure.

When Will Elipse Be Available?

Elipse is currently not available in the United States, although patients in several other countries have found weight loss success with Elipse. Dr. Moore is one of 12 bariatric surgeons nationally who have been selected to be involved in United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) trials for this exciting new weight loss balloon. Elipse will not be available until it receives FDA approval.
