The LAP-BAND® System provides a safe and effective way to achieve and maintain weight loss without cutting or stapling your stomach. The band limits the amount of food you can eat at each meal, helping you to feel full sooner and stay satisfied longer. This makes it easier to adopt and stay on track with healthy eating and lifestyle habits.

How Does the LAP-BAND® System Work?

During the LAP-BAND® procedure, your bariatric surgeon will wrap a small band around your stomach, creating a smaller upper stomach pouch. When you swallow food, it will go into this small pouch. You will eat smaller meals because the food is slowed down in the pouch and you will also feel full longer.

Our team will adjust the amount of saline in your band (often called a “fill level”) as needed to help keep you on track to meet your weight loss and health goals. The band can be tightened or loosened as necessary over time to find the optimum fit for you.

Advantages of the Laparoscopic Approach

*Our surgeons utilize a minimally invasive laparoscopic surgical technique which typically results in a shorter hospital stay, faster recovery, smaller scars and less pain than traditional “open” bariatric surgeries. *Results may vary

*What Are the Benefits of the LAP-BAND® System?

The most significant benefit of the LAP-BAND® System is the improvement, and in some cases resolution, of obesity-related diseases. Health conditions related to obesity which are dramatically improved by the LAP-BAND® include Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea and high cholesterol.

Additional effects of bariatric surgery include significant weight loss and improved quality of life. *Results may vary

*What Kind of Results Can I Expect?

Studies have shown that patients lost an average of 60% of their excess body weight and kept it off for 5 years with the LAP-BAND® System. Between 20 and 59% of patients were able to control their Type 2 diabetes, 71% experienced improvement of their high cholesterol and 45% resolved their sleep apnea following their LAP-BAND® procedure.*

Your results will vary greatly depending upon how well you adopt a healthier lifestyle following your LAP-BAND® procedure. Patients who commit themselves to a new, healthier lifestyle following bariatric surgery experience greater success in meeting their weight loss goals. *Results may vary

Band Removal and It’s Effects

The band is intended for long-term use but can be removed if necessary. Please keep in mind that surgery reversal is not a simple process and weight gain is usually observed in people who have had their bands removed but do not continue with healthy eating habits.

About Band Fills

Gastric Band Adjustments and Fills

The band is adjustable, allowing your surgeon to personalize your band fit over time. After an adjustment, you’ll be satisfied with less food so you can keep losing weight gradually *at a rate of about 1 to 2 pounds per week. *Results may vary

Adjusting Your Band Fit Over Time

Your first band adjustment will probably be scheduled about 1 week after you begin eating solid food (4 to 6 weeks after surgery) to ensure that your stomach is fully healed. Your band fit will change as you lose weight and will require periodic band adjustments to help you stay on track and meet your weight loss goals.

Just 5 to 10 Minutes

Fast and easy band adjustments take place at the Moore Metabolics office and do not require additional surgery. An adjustment in which saline is added to your band is referred to as a “fill.” The saline is placed through the port, which will be located in your abdomen just under the skin. The saline travels through the tube and into the band, making the band fit more snugly around your stomach. This reduces the size of the opening between the upper and lower stomach pouches and causes food to empty from your upper stomach pouch more slowly. That’s why you’ll feel full sooner and stay satisfied longer after a band fill. An adjustment can also involve removing saline from the band through the port.

Your Band Adjustment Schedule

There is no set schedule for band adjustments because each person’s needs are different. Listening to your band by paying attention to physical signs and tracking your weight loss will help you to know when it may be time for an adjustment.
